Dhubri district police in proper coordination with Kokrajhar district police have intensified operations against the syndicate that controls cattle smuggling in lower Assam since Monday late evening.

The Dhubri and Kokrajhar police have pulled up socks after a week following Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s directive to DGP Kuladhar Saikia to take action against those running syndicates, particularly against the cattle smugglers.

A joint police team of Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts carried out operations in four different places located in Dhubri and Gauripur town of Dhubri district against the cattle syndicate on Monday late evening.

The manhunt for the cattle smugglers continued even on Tuesday in different locations of Dhubri district, police sources said.

When contacted on Tuesday to know about the details of the operations, Rajen Singh, superintendent of police, Kokrajhar, refused to speak anything over the phone and advised this correspondent to visit his office chamber located at Kokrajhar which is about 70 km away from Dhubri to collect information regarding cattle smuggling, if needed.

Meanwhile, the Gauripur police in Dhubri district seized 15 cattle heads (7 cattle heads seized on Tuesday while 8 were seized on Friday) from Balajan area on National Highway 31.

The seized cattle heads were being transported in a locally-made unregistered three-wheeler. Police arrested two cattle carriers identified as Raju Miyan, a resident of an area under Agomoni police station and Inamul Hussein, a resident of Chagolia under Golakganj police station in Dhubri district.

Earlier, on June 12, during a joint operation launched by Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar district police, 13 known cattle smugglers were arrested and police also seized 12 cattle heads from their possession.

Police sources said Kokrajhar police have also intensified operation to arrest four cattle smugglers of Dhubri district identified as Saiful Islam, A.K. Mondal, Adam Ali and Jahangir Alom in connection with a case (No 34 / 2019) registered at Kachgoan police station of Kokrajhar district.

Bidyut Bikash Bora Bhuyan, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Gossaigaon of Kokrajhar district, who is leading the entire operation, said, “The operation will continue till the culprits involved in cattle smuggling are arrested.”

But till filling of this report, no one has been arrested.
