A local court in Sivasagar on Monday sent Debashis Khargharia, who was arrested by police in connection with the case of abatement of his parents’ suicide, to 14-day judicial custody.

Acting on a complaint filed by his sister Monika, Debasis was arrested from Six Mile area in Guwahati on July 19 after being at large for 18 days. Debasis’s wife Getasree, who was also identified as an accused in the case, however, still is absconding.

He was produced in the court after the completion of his three-day police remand. Earlier on July 20, he was sent to three-day police remand by the court.

Debasis’s parents –Rajani and Ruby Khargharia lived in a rented house in Sivasagar. Acting on a tip off, the Sivasagar police-in a joint operation with the city police-nabbed the culprit from the Six Mile area in Guwahati.

Debashish’s parents had left behind five notes blaming their son, an ONGC employee and his wife Geetashree, a TET teacher, for driving them to suicide, said a TOI report.

The couple were in such dire straits that they could not afford to buy food, medicines and pay house rent.

They had sold all their properties to secure a job for their son, one of the notes mentioned. But after getting the job, Debashish reportedly cut off all ties with his parents.

One of the three married daughters of the deceased couple filed an FIR with the Sivasagar police holding her brother and sister-in-law responsible for the suicide of their parents.

Based on her complaint, the Sivasagar police registered a case against Debashish and his wife under section 306 and 420 of IPC.
