Guwahati: The Indian National Congress has appointed Wazed Ali Choudhury as the Leader and Dr Joy Prakash Das as the Deputy Leader of its Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The decision was cleared by the party high command and officially communicated by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal through a press release issued on May 26.
The leadership announcement follows a series of internal consultations within the party over the CLP structure in Assam during the ongoing session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi had indicated that the final decision would be taken by the AICC after discussions with MLAs and central observers, and that the state unit would comply with the directive.
Congress MLAs had also conducted internal deliberations in Guwahati in recent days, reflecting interest in the leadership selection, which is expected to influence the party’s strategy in the House, including the choice of the Leader of the Opposition.
