Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday appealed to parents and teachers to motivate their children to inculcate interests in sports, as sports is a way to become healthy and wealthy.
Speaking at the National Ranking Table Tennis Championship and 66th Inter District and Assam State Table Tennis Championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here on Friday evening, Chief Minister Sonowal said that sports should be made a way of life as sports has the potential to augur friendship, universal brotherhood, peace and harmony.
He also hailed the move of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who started a programme called ‘Khelo India’ which is largely responsible for generating love for the sports. He also said that this love for sports has resulted in producing several sporting talents even from the remote parts of the country. He also attributed this never before love to impressive results in international sporting events like Asian Games.
Stating his Government’s thrust on sports, Chief Minister Sonowal said that ever since his government has assumed power he has been trying to transform Guwahati into a sports capital of the country.
Sonowal also handed over the winner’s trophy to Siddhesh Pandey and runner up trophy to Manav Tahkkar on the occasion.
President of Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) MP Singh, senior vice president TTFI Sanjay Singh, adviser TTFI Dhanraj Chowdhury, president of Assam Table Tennis Association Mriganka Barman, its secretary Tridip Duwara, member secretary, State Level Advisory Committee for Sports and Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar, Principal of Don Bosco School, Guwahati Father Sebastian Mathew and a host other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
