Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that Dr Habbey Teron, MLA from the Amri (ST) Hills constituency, has been nominated as the government’s candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The announcement was made via a post on social media platform X, where the Chief Minister highlighted that the decision aligns with the government’s broader focus on ensuring inclusive representation within the state’s political framework, particularly for tribal communities.
Sarma stated that Dr Teron, who is a medical practitioner by profession, also holds the distinction of being the first legislator elected from the newly formed Amri constituency. He added that Dr Teron’s elevation is expected to further strengthen representation from the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao regions within the Assembly.
In his post, the Chief Minister said he was pleased to nominate Dr Teron for the constitutional post and expressed confidence that the move would enhance the voice of indigenous communities in legislative affairs.
He also conveyed his best wishes to Dr Teron for his new responsibility, noting that the nomination reflects both trust in his capabilities and recognition of his public mandate.
The selection of Dr Teron is being viewed as a notable development in Assam’s political landscape, particularly as it marks greater participation from newly created constituencies and reinforces representation from the hill districts.
