Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a package of Rs five crore from the State Government for the conservation of the historic Charideo Maidam.

The State Finance Minister made this announcement while attending the second Charaideo Mahotsav as the chief guest at the Charideo Maidam in Charideo district on Wednesday.

Sarma went straight from the helipad to the Maidam and inspected the heritage site maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.

The minister also took part at the Phuralung and Banphi puja solemnized by the Ahom priests.

Later addressing the mammoth gathering, the State Finance Minister made the announcement of the financial assistance package of the State Government for maintenance of the Charideo Maidam.

The Minister also assured that an ambitious plan will be taken up shortly by the State Government to convert the dilapidated Sivasagar-Sonari road into a four-lane one.

Earlier in the day, the second Charideo Mahotsav began in a colourful manner.

The three-day cultural extravaganza is being organized under the aegis of the Charideo district administration in association and cooperation of the local people.

On Wednesday morning, Charideo Deputy Commissioner Bibekananda Phukan inaugurated the Mahotsav by hoisting the flag.

It was followed by offering tributes to martyrs which was led by vice president of All Assam Students Union (AASU) Manik Gogoi, noted lawyer Dambaru Rajkonwar and working president of the organizing committee, Dharmeswar Konwar.

A plantation programme was also organized during inauguration of the Mahotsav.

Later in the day, the main exhibition was inaugurated by State Power Minister Tapan Gogoi.

The open session was inaugurated by Member of Lok Sabha from Jorhat, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa which was attended by host of dignitaries.
