The two consecutive boat mishaps in two separate places of West Goalpara on Monday and Tuesday have shocked the people of the district as SDRF and river police have failed to trace the bodies of victims of both the mishaps till filing of this report on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, a 20-members team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Pancharatna River Police Station launched an operation covering almost 5 km in the heart of river Brahmaputra in search of the two victims of Tuesday’s boat mishap.
However, the bodies of the victims – 37-year-old Billal Hussain and 7-year-old Amina Khatoon couldn’t be recovered.
The team engaged in the search operation at Rakhaldubi, the place of occurrence of the first incident, also failed to find out the little eighteen months girl.
In the second incident, the victims were on board a wooden country boat which capsized due to sudden cyclonic storm that lashed the area on Tuesday evening in river Brahmaputra.
Billal Hussain and Iman Ali (who is safe) were going to the newly erupted Motiharipara char in the heart of river Brahmaputra. On the other hand, Amina boarded the boat to go back to her home in the same char. She came to see her grandparents.
Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday to see the SDRF and river police teams’ search operation in river Brahmaputra, but went back depressed as no body could be recovered.
The people blamed bad luck for both the incidents. “We have lived and grown with the mighty Brahmaputra. But very rarely accidents occur here. But it seems this time we are not lucky enough,” remarked an elderly man.
