The Assam Public Works (APW) on Tuesday decided to approach the Supreme Court again seeking its intervention against the NGT’s ‘go ahead’ to the expert committee on Lower Subansiri dam.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently gave a ‘go ahead’ to a three-member expert committee supervising the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri dam.

“Yes, in a very short time, we will move the Supreme Court,” said APW president Abhijeet Sharma.

Earlier, APW had submitted a petition in the apex court with an alternative dam proposal of a true ‘Run of the River’ project, as prepared by their consultant Pradip Bhuyan.

The new project proposal was made by utilizing the present level of construction of the Lower Subansiri dam, its intake structure, power house and so on.

“This can replace the present format of the dam as Peaking Hydro Electric Project that holds up water for 20 hours or so in lean months to generate peak load power in 4 hours destroying the ecology, environment downstream of the dam completely,” said Pradip Bhuyan.

“Also, as Peaking HEP, it is a big dam in a highly seismic zone,” added Bhuyan.

The APW had earlier approached the SC which forwarded the matter to the NGT.
