The Jonai Anchalik Students’ Union has demanded the Public Work Department to immediately repair the road linking National Highway-15 and Bahir-Jonai (Tinmailghat) in Dhemaji district.
Jonai Anchalik Students’ Union, a unit of Assam’s apex students’ body All Assam Students Union (AASU), has expressed strong concern over the dilapidated condition of the road.
The union in a representation submitted to Assam chief minister through the Jonai Sub-divisional Officer on Tuesday, lamented that the PWD is not keen to repair the deplorable roads in and around Jonai town which is causing untold miseries to the commuters.
It further said that the authority, even after repeated appeals from the locals, has not yet installed street lights along the 1-km stretch highway from Jonai town to Ruksin gate (Arunachal).
This has encouraged the anti-social elements to rule the roost in the area during night hours.
Another problem that was pointed out by the students’ union functionaries is lack of proper drainage system at Jonai.
It is observed that rainwater inundates many portions of the Jonai town during monsoon and creates problems for the locals.
The union also submitted copy of the representation to Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu and deputy commissioner of Dhemaji.
Both the MLA and the DC were requested to make intervention for early renovation of the road at Jonai, installation of street lights and introduction of garbage disposal measure besides construction of well-planned drain to flush out stagnant water.
The student’ union also cautioned the authority of rigorous agitation on democratic way if the authorities concerned do not reciprocate its genuine demands.
The renovation of 7-km long road from NH-15 to Bahir-Jonai tinali has been sanctioned under PWD’s SOPD scheme and the tender process is already over.
The contractor concerned is allegedly delaying the construction work pretending non-receipt of final work order from the PWD authority.
Realising the commuters’ hardship along Jonai Bazar road, members of Jonai Block BJP Yuva Morcha recently repaired a portion of the road with voluntary contribution.
They filled the large potholes with sand-gravel and gave respite to the commuters travel along the road.
