“Manab Sarkar, Rajiv Orang, Mandeep Hazarika and Raju Dey along with many others had gathered before our office in front of Goalpara College and began shouting abusive and communal languages besides pelting stones,” Kashyap told Northeast Now.

“Some of them were intoxicated also. As a result we sustained injuries,” said Kashyap.

“But when their language deteriorated to a new low people from around the area tried to prevent them during which one Manab Sarkar was injured,” he added.

On the other hand, Rajiv Orang of ABVP said, “We were preparing for a statewide demonstration for Wednesday and were having discussions among ourselves in front of the Goalpara College gate.”

“But we were suddenly attacked by some AASU members. We never went to attack the AASU office as alleged,” the ABVP leader claimed.

Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation.

“We have received complaints from both the organisations and began investigations to find the fact,” a police officer told Northeast Now.

The tension between the two organisations grew few days back as the AASU demanded action against two Goalpara College teachers – Hemanta Kalita and Dhananjoy Medhi – who are holding ABVP posts.

The AASU lodged a complaint before the principal of Goalpara College in this regard.

A high-placed ABVP source, preferring anonymity, alleged, “These are all part of a nasty political game designed by a politician keeping in view the next assembly election.”

“He is trying to reap benefit by creating tussle between the two students’ bodies,” the source added.
