Dibrugarh: Security forces launched a massive search operation in Arunachal Pradeshโs Changlang district following an encounter between Assam Rifles and NSCN militants in the Doimukh Nalla area under Miao police station.
Two heavily armed militants were killed during the intense exchange of fire.
The slain cadres were identified as self-styled Lt. Col. Umkong and self-styled Sergeant Enu.
Top officials said intelligence inputs had confirmed the presence of 14 to 15 heavily armed militants who were allegedly pressuring villagers for extortion.
After the killing of the two cadres, security forces intensified counter-insurgency operations in the area.
Meanwhile, during an extensive search, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the encounter site, including one AK-series rifle, one 5.56 mm rifle, one pistol, one hand grenade, one radio set, two torch lights, and live ammunition of various weapons.
Police have also registered an FIR in this regard.
In a press release, the NSCN stated:
โWe express our profound shock, anguish, and strongest condemnation over the grave and unfortunate incident that unfolded at Doimuk Nala area under Miao Circle, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, where our Naga Army unit from the Pangsau Pass Command Group, while on duty in maintaining peace mobilisation within our own ancestral homeland and to revive the Stilwell International Highway for the benefit of people residing in that area, came under intense and unprovoked firing from the Indian Security Forces of the 8th Assam Rifles at approximately 8:30 pm on May 11, 2026.โ
It further added:
โIn this tragic and deeply distressing encounter, two of our cadres lost their lives. Lt. Col. Umkong, Naga Army from Nayang village under Tangshang region, and Sgt. Enu, Naga Army from Chithok village, Leinong region. Their untimely deaths represent not only an irreparable loss to their families and comrades but also a painful reminder of the continuing suffering and sacrifices endured by the Naga people. We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the bereaved families, standing in solidarity with them in this hour of profound grief.โ
โWe unequivocally condemn this irresponsible and provocative act, particularly at a time when our commitment to maintaining peace and restraint has been made abundantly clear. Such actions are deeply regrettable and dangerously threaten to destabilise the fragile peace and mutual understanding that has been carefully sustained with patience and responsibility.
At this critical juncture, the use of force and aggression only deepens mistrust, escalates tensions, and undermines efforts toward peaceful coexistence and political dialogue. Incidents of this nature must not be allowed to derail the pursuit of peace or extinguish the aspirations of a people longing for justice, dignity, and security,โ the release stated.
