Gumin Mize National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
Complaint filed with NHRC alleging custodial torture of Arunachal activist Gumin Mize at a police station in Assamโ€™s Lakhimpur district.

Reported by Maksam Tayeng

Pasighat: A complaint has been filed before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging custodial torture of Arunachal Pradesh anti-drug activist Gumin Mize at Bihpuria Police Station in Assamโ€™s Lakhimpur district.

The petition was submitted by Buteng Tayeng of Namsai, who has accused police personnel of subjecting Mize to severe physical assault, verbal abuse and denying him proper medical examination while in custody. It has sought an independent NHRC probe and strict action against those responsible.

According to the complaint, Mize sustained serious injuries during detention. Circulating photographs on social media showing visible bruises have fuelled public anger and triggered widespread reactions across Arunachal Pradesh.

Civil society groups, student organisations and anti-drug campaigners have strongly condemned the alleged incident, demanding accountability and a transparent investigation. Several activists have also called for immediate intervention by human rights authorities and close monitoring of the probe.

Mize, known for his anti-drug awareness work, has received support from various organisations and local residents following the allegations.

The incident has reignited debate over custodial violence and human rights safeguards in the region, with protesters urging authorities in both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to ensure an impartial inquiry.

As of now, the concerned police authorities have not issued any official response. The matter is expected to draw further attention as human rights bodies examine the complaint.
