After winning 96 percent of the total seats unopposed in the three tier panchayat in Tripura, BJP has now swept the poll held for the rest of the seats on September 30.

The results for the three tier panchayat elections were declared on Wednesday afternoon. However, the party seems to have failed to completely root out its opposition including the Left Front and the Congress.

The party has won 9 out of 10 seats under Kadamtala block. IPFT has clinched one. BJP has won in seven seats of the Bishnupur gram panchayat but lost in Baghner Jherjheri and East Churaebari. The IPFT has won the East Phulbari seat. Of the 41 seats in Panisagar, BJP has won 39 seats and the rest has been occupied by CPI-M. CPI-M has also won the Laxmipur seat, where as BJP has swept Jolai.

On the other hand, CPI-M has won the crucial seat of Kuti Rajnagar Samiti. CPI-M candidate Jaharul Haq has defeated BJP’s Abdul Khaliq by 325 votes. Jaharul Haq has secured 1,341 votes and Abdul Khaliq secured 1,016 votes, IPFT 306, Congress 93, People Congress 10.

Reacting to the results, BJP leader Kajal Das said that BJP candidates were attacked for which the candidates could not go out for campaigning. On the other hand CPI-M candidate Jaharul Haq said people have lost their faith in BJP and hence they have voted for the CPI-M candidate.  Returning Officer Baijayanta Das said the election was conducted peacefully.

By-polls to the three-tier panchayat system in Tripura were necessitated by large-scale resignations tendered by office-bearers in the wake of assumption of power by the BJP-IPFT coalition government from March 9.
