The activists of the Bajali College Unit along with the Bajali Unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a silent demonstration in the Bajali College campus at Pathsala in Barpeta district on Saturday in protest against rapists.

The activists of the Bajali College Unit and the Bajali Unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad jointly organised the protest displaying placards which read as ‘Don’t Tell Me How to Dress, Tell Them Not To Rape’, ‘Nareer Daam Deshat Samaan’ (‘Value of Women Same in Country’), ‘Nareer Suraksha Nishit Karak’ (Ensure Safety of Women’.

The ABVP activists protested against the increase in rape cases in the Bajali Sub-division under Barpeta district and other parts of Assam.

The protestors also demanded the government to promulgate stringent law against the rapists.

Rakesh Talukdar, General Secretary of Bajali College Students’ Union, “Crime against women occurs every day in India. Women are not safe whether it is in their houses or public places. In view of the increasing number of crimes against women in Assam, stricter law should be formulated in Assam too as Arunachal Pradesh.”

It may be mentioned that Arunachal Pradesh recently became the fourth State in the country to pass a legislation approving the death penalty for child rape.

The Criminal Laws (Arunachal Pradesh) Amendment Bill-2018 was passed by unanimous voice vote in the Arunachal Pradesh State Assembly by all the members present. The development in this regard follows a series of incidents where the public resorted to vigilante justice to punish alleged child rapists.

Similar legislations were earlier approved by the BJP-ruled State in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
