In a bizarre incident, a blast at the laboratory of Beijing University in China left three students dead on Wednesday, according to the city’s fire department said, reports Aljazeera.

The reported quoted the Beijing Fire Department as saying that there was an explosion at the experimental site during a scientific research experiment on wastewater treatment in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory that killed three students involved in the experiment.

The Beijing Fire Department broke the news through a post on its social media account.

The incident took place just after 9:30 am local time (01:30 GMT) at the Beijing Jiaotong University in the western part of the city.

The report further added that videos of the scene, broadcast on local media, showed large flames and plumes of smoke pouring out of a low-rise building on the university campus.

About 30 fire engines were sent to the scene and took nearly an hour to get the blaze under control.

Meanwhile, local authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the incident.
