NEW DELHI: India, on Wednesday (March 27) summoned the acting deputy chief of mission of the US embassy in New Delhi regarding comments made by the United States concerning the arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The US state department, on March 25, had stated that the United States is closely monitoring reports of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest and advocates for a fair legal process.

This statement from the United States state department came after Germany’s response to the case prompted a diplomatic protest from India.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the enforcement directorate (ED) on March 22 on corruption allegations, which his party – the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – has refuted.

This arrest occurred just a month before the Lok Sabha elections.

The US state department spokesperson, responding to an inquiry about the case, emphasized: “We support a fair, transparent and expeditious legal process for chief minister Kejriwal.”

India had previously summoned a German diplomat on Saturday (March 23) to express its disapproval of the German government’s comments regarding Kejriwal’s arrest.

“India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted,” India’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday (March 27).
