The NIT Silchar is all set to host the 2019 edition of the prestigious All India Inter NIT (AIINIT) tournament for table tennis and yoga from October 11-13.

Disclosing this to the media during a press conference at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, the director of the institution, Shivaji Bandopadhay said, “A total of 17 NITs out of 31 in the country will compete in the next three days.”

He added, “There will be 217 participants including 74 female and 141 male will lock horns to win the coveted medals for these two sporting events.”

“Yoga has been included in our academic curriculum since 2018. Every student has to take part in yoga session, which is even audited,” informed the director, NIT Silchar.

Bandopadhay said, “The minister for forest, environment, fisheries and excise, Parimal Suklabaidya, will be present as the chief guest in this function and declare the tournament open. The Cachar deputy commissioner Laya Madduri will be the guest of honour.”

The director of NIT Silchar further said, “The host institute earlier in 2015 organized a similar nationwide tournament here and since then every year it has been a podium finish for NIT Silchar.”

Acting dean of Students Welfare of NIT Silchar, M. Ali Ahmed, speaking to Northeast Now, said, “In 2015, NIT Silchar hosting the tournament emerged as the 1st runner-up, in 2016 again became the 1st runners-up in NIT Srinagar and in 2017 the institute became 2nd runner-up in NIT Kurukshetra and in 2018, it emerged the champions in VNIT Nagar.”

He added, “The district sports association will help NIT Silchar making arrangement for the judges and scorers and the teaching fraternity at large would put in their best efforts to make this event a magnum opus.”

“In preparations for this mammoth event, the institute has left no stone unturned. The sports complex and the students’ activity centre have been renovated with graffiti and state-of-the-art flooring,” the acting dean of Students Welfare said.

The NIT Silchar director Shivaji Bandopadhay said, “I strongly feel that AIINIT will turn out to be a wonderful platform for the young budding sportspersons from all the participating NITs giving the competitors a chance to expose, introspect and improve their talents.”
