Assam on Wednesday recorded 12 Covid-19 positive cases, taking the total to 13.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday evening tweeted about eight more Covid-19 positive cases in the state.

“All eight new cases are people who had participated in Tablighi Jamat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz,” the health minister said.

According to the minister, all the new cases are from Golaghat district and their samples were tested in the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

The official said all the eight patients were in quarantine at the special quarantine centre set up within the Kushal Konwar District Hospital at Golaghat.

While women were not allowed inside the Tabligi Jamaat held at Nizammudin Dargah in Delhi recently it is suspected that the women got infected with the virus from the men.

The Centre and states went into an overdrive to identify all those who had attended the event and make arrangements to quarantine them if they had returned to their respective states.

The Nizamuddin event which started in the capital on March 13 is viewed as the epicenter of the fresh Covid-19 outbreak.

Health minister Sarma made an appeal through social media asking the people to come out and quarantine themselves if they had attended the event.

Sarma on Wednesday afternoon had talked about the probability of four to five more Covid-19 positive cases at JMCH.

He had said that the government was waiting for a confirmatory report from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
