Guwahati: IIT Guwahati has strengthened its position in global academia by securing the ninth spot among Indian institutions in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The institute has also been placed at 349 in the world rankings.
The latest QS list places IIT Delhi at the top in India with a global rank of 118. It is followed by IIT Bombay (134) and IIT Madras (170).
IIT Kharagpur holds the fourth position nationally at 205, while IISc Bengaluru and IIT Kanpur share the fifth spot at 221.
The University of Delhi is ranked seventh in India at 332, followed by IIT Roorkee at 335. IIT Guwahati appears next at ninth place with its global rank of 349.
The report notes IIT Guwahatiโs steady performance across several parameters, including research quality, academic reputation, faculty strength, industry collaboration and international engagement.
Since its establishment in 1994, the institute has grown into a leading technical education centre and continues to hold the top position in the Northeast region.
Several other Indian institutions also feature in the rankings, including Shoolini University (452 globally), Anna University, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Chandigarh University, IIT Indore, Jawaharlal Nehru University, BITS Pilani, IIT Hyderabad, Vellore Institute of Technology, Symbiosis International University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
On the global front, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its number one position for the 15th consecutive year. Imperial College London and Stanford University share second place, followed by Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge.
Rounding out the global top ten are Caltech, ETH Zurich, University College London and the National University of Singapore, reflecting continued dominance by institutions from the US, UK and Asiaโs leading education hubs.
Indiaโs overall presence in global higher education continues to expand, with a few institutions entering the top 200 and several others improving their positions due to stronger emphasis on research output, innovation and international partnerships.
The improving performance of institutes such as IIT Guwahati is being seen as a sign that Indiaโs higher education system is gaining stronger global standing.
The steady progress of institutions such as IIT Guwahati reflects the growing global competitiveness of Indian higher education, experts said, adding that further advancement would require increased investment in research infrastructure, stronger faculty development and wider international collaboration for more Indian universities to enter the top 100 globally.
Among global university ranking systems, QS is one of the most closely followed. It measures institutions using several indicators, such as academic standing, employer perception, research performance, studentโfaculty balance, and international exposure.
