Guwahati: Guwahati-based advocate and environmental activist Anindita Das has been asked to appear before police in connection with a case linked to protests against tree felling for a flyover project in the cityโ€™s Bharalumukh area.

Sharing a copy of the notice on social media on Sunday, Das alleged that police personnel had recently visited her residence while she was away. She later learnt that she had been directed to appear at Oil Police Station in Golaghat district.

The case stems from protests held in 2024 against the felling of old-growth and mature trees in Bharalumukh, where residents, environmental groups and civil society members had opposed the removal of green cover for the flyover project.

Das said she had earlier been granted anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court in connection with the case.

Describing the development as personally distressing, the advocate wrote: โ€œFor the first time, I will have to stand in the dock.โ€

According to the document shared by her, the notice names her as an accused in Case No. PRC 165/26, with June 25, 2026, listed as the next date related to the proceedings.

The legal action comes amid growing public opposition in Guwahati to infrastructure projects involving large-scale tree felling, with several activists and residents raising concerns over the loss of urban green cover and its environmental impact.

Despite the proceedings against her, Das asserted that the campaign against tree felling would continue.
