Dibrugarh: Police have apprehended the absconding driver, Shamim Ahmed, from Lahowal in Dibrugarh district, days after his alleged involvement in a fatal road accident in Mathgharia, Guwahati.

According to official sources, the arrest follows an intensive manhunt launched after the incident, which claimed the lives of three young women. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Mathgharia area, where a Swift car reportedly rammed into a stationary truck with severe impact, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was being driven at high speed at the time of the crash. Authorities said the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting a statewide search operation.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police tracked down the driver in Lahowal, where he had allegedly been hiding since the incident. Investigators said he had switched off his mobile phone in an attempt to evade arrest.

Officials said the accused will be brought to Guwahati for further interrogation. Legal proceedings are set to follow, and efforts are underway to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the crash.

The incident had triggered widespread public outrage, renewing concerns over reckless driving and the need for stricter road safety enforcement in urban areas.
