Gupta joined the Indian Railways as a clerk in 1954 in Amingaon in North Guwahati.

During his career, he came into contact with several socialist leaders like Hem Baruah, Horeswar Goswami, Biswa Goswami and Lakhyadhar Choudhury whose influence helped shape his socialist sentiments.

Railway employees will hold prayer meetings and flags of the union in all of its offices will fly at half-mast for a week as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

NFRMU member Shiva Gopal Mishra said, “Comrade Rakhal Das Gupta was a character larger than life and will be sadly missed by the working class not only in India but in the whole world.”

“His death has brought people from numerous trade unions and other progressive organizations from around the world together in mourning,” he said.
