Guwahati: Renowned Bengali film director Anik Dutta was found dead on Wednesday, May 27, after reportedly falling from the terrace of his multi-storey residence in South Kolkata.

He was taken to a private hospital near Dhakuria shortly after the incident, where medical staff declared him brought dead. His sudden death has triggered shock across the Bengali film industry.

Sreelekha Mitra, Rudranil Ghosh and Arindam Sil visited the hospital to pay their respects. The death was also confirmed by CPI(M) leaders and hospital sources.

A police team has begun examining the spot as part of the investigation. So far, the family has not issued any public statement.

Dutta began his career as a director in 2012 with Bhooter Bhabishyat, a film that received strong critical appreciation and commercial success. He later directed films such as Acharya Pradeep, Barunbabur Bondhu, and Aparajito, among others.

In 2019, Bhobishyoter Bhoot was removed from Kolkata theatres within a day of its release. Speaking to the media at the time, Dutta said the decision was linked to the filmโ€™s content, adding that a simple romantic storyline may not have faced the same reaction.

He suggested that certain political sections may have been uncomfortable with the satire, even though no one was directly named.

He also maintained that filmmakers have the right to critique society and described the film as a satirical take on contemporary times.

When asked whether the controversy was connected to his comments on then West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said it was possible, but added that other elements in the film might also have contributed to the reaction.
