Guwahati: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) brought in people from outside to influence the Assam Assembly elections, claiming the party lacked confidence in winning solely through the votes of the stateโs residents.
Addressing an election rally at Tentulia in North 24 Parganas district, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo alleged that individuals were mobilised from Uttar Pradesh to participate in the Assam polls. โA trainload of 50,000 people were brought to Assam from Uttar Pradesh,โ she claimed.
Taking a sharp dig at the BJP, Banerjee said, โEven a snake can be trusted, but not the BJP,โ as political rhetoric intensified ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
She also alleged that constitutional and investigative agencies were not functioning impartially under the BJP-led Central government. โNo agency in the country is neutral under the BJP government at the Centre because the saffron party has bought them all,โ she said.
Raising concerns over electoral rolls in West Bengal, Banerjee claimed that nearly 90 lakh names had been deleted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Citing a newspaper report, she said that of these, 60 lakh were Hindus and 30 lakh were Muslims.
Referring to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam, she alleged that the process had disproportionately affected Hindus. โOut of 19 lakh names excluded, 13 lakh were Hindus and 6 lakh were Muslims,โ she said.
The Assam Assembly elections were held in a single phase across all 126 constituencies, with the Election Commission recording a voter turnout of 85.91%.
