Guwahati: Director Bhargav Saikia’s Sikkim-set debut feature Bokshi, produced by Saikia and written by debutant screenwriter and executive producer Harsh Vaibhav under Lorien Motion Pictures, will now be released in Indian cinemas on December 4, 2026.

The film was earlier scheduled for an all-India theatrical release on October 9. Its release was postponed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) Examining Committee referred it to the Revising Committee for further review over its supernatural themes, depiction of witchcraft, gruesome violence and bloodshed.

The Revising Committee has now cleared Bokshi with an “A” certificate and minimal modifications. The producers said the revised release date would allow them to carry out the theatrical campaign and complete preparations for the film’s release.

Saikia, who is from Biswanath Chariali in Assam, shot the film extensively in Sikkim. The film combines folk horror, coming-of-age themes and mystery, and follows Anahita, a troubled teenager whose school trek to a remote prehistoric site leads to connections with an ancient legend.

As the story unfolds, Anahita is drawn into a mystery in which myth and reality begin to converge.

The film had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2025 and was later screened at several international genre film festivals. It was the only Indian feature film selected for the 2025 editions of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain, the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland and SXSW Sydney in Australia.

The cast includes Prasanna Bisht, Mansi Multani and Siddharth Shaw in pivotal roles, while Shernaz Patel lends her voice to the titular character, Bokshi.

A multilingual film in Hindi, English and Nepali, Bokshi also features Boksirit, a fictional language created specifically for the film by Dutch linguist Jan van Steenbergen. According to the production company, the film is the second Indian feature after Baahubali to feature a constructed language.

Lorien Motion Pictures announced the revised release date through its official social media handles and said the film would be released in select cinemas across India on December 4.
