Renowned actor Shabana Azmi was injured in a mishap on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm near a toll plaza at Khalapur in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.

A media report quoted Raigad superintendent of police Anil Paraskar as saying that the car in which Azmi was travelling rammed into a truck.

She was on her way to Khandala, where the family has a holiday home.

According to reports, Azmi’s husband, lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar was present in another car and he escaped unhurt

The driver of the car was also injured in the incident.

The injured were taken to the MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai, said police.

Police said the 69-year-old actor sustained minor injuries on her neck and chin and near the eye and is out of danger.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Twitter handle said the “accident is distressing” and prayed for her quick recovery.

“The news of @AzmiShabana Ji’s injury in an accident is distressing. I pray for her quick recovery,” tweeted Modi.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “Came to know abt Shabana Azmi ji’s accident. I pray to God for her fast recovery and good health.”

Azmi’s spokesperson said she was undergoing a check-up.

“She is fine, nothing to worry about,” a report quoted Azmi’s spokesperson as saying.

As the pictures from the mishap surfaced online, Azmi’s fans were left in a state of shock with the social media flooded with people praying for the actor’s quick recovery.

The photographs of the incident show Shabana Azmi being helped out of the rear seats of the SUV with her face and eye swollen.

The impact was so massive that the front passenger’s side of the SUV was completely destroyed.

Another photograph shows the bonnet of the SUV vehicle crumpled and the radiator and bonnet wrecked.

It may be mentioned that Shabana Azmi also acted in Assam’s legendary artiste Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s film ‘Ek Pal’.
