Five students fell ill in a tea garden area under Lakhimpur district after consuming midday meal served in their school by an NGO.

The incident took place at No. 9 Chinatalyah Tea Worker LP School in Chinatalyah Tea Estate under Lakhimpur Elementary Education Block.

According to sources, students started vomiting while taking the lunch served by NGO Paros Agro Society.

The incident prompted the school management to stop other pupils from taking the lunch.

As five students complained of nausea, stomach pain and continued vomiting, they were rushed to the hospital of Chinatalyah Tea Estate on Friday.

The students admitted to the hospital were identified as Manmatia Orang, Mariyam Indwar, Sanjeet Garh, Nigu Kujur and Akash Orang.

Similar incident was also reported from Rangajan High School under the same education block in Lakhimpur district.

It may be mentioned that controversies erupted with reports of “inadequate” and “unhealthy food” being served to school children in the name of midday meal by some NGOs engaged by the Assam government.

The North Lakhimpur regional unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged protest in North Lakhimpur over the incident.

The North Lakhimpur AASU led by its president Pranjeet Gogoi and secretary Poonamjyoti Buragohain also burnt the effigy of Assam education minister Siddharta Bhattacharya on Friday evening.
