Kokrajhar: Hemant Soren intensified his party’s campaign outreach in Assam on Saturday, launching a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party while pitching the “Jharkhand model” of governance as a viable framework for the poll-bound state.
Addressing a public rally in Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district, Soren highlighted tribal rights, education, and tea garden workers’ welfare as key electoral issues.
“This election is not merely about a change in power, but a decisive battle for rights and dignity,” Soren said, urging voters to remain cautious of electoral inducements.
He added, “Education is the strongest tool for empowerment, and our focus must remain on securing a better future for the next generation.”
Campaigning in support of party candidate Fredericksan Hansda, the Jharkhand Chief Minister underscored what he described as governance achievements in his home state. He asserted that reforms in government schools and financial assistance for higher education among tribal students have significantly improved participation in competitive examinations.
“In Jharkhand, we are bearing the cost of higher education for tribal students. Such a model can transform Assam as well,” he claimed.
Soren also brought attention to the longstanding concerns of tea garden workers in Assam, stating that despite their “immense contribution to the national economy,” they continue to be deprived of basic rights and benefits.
“Workers are often lured during elections but forgotten afterward. This cycle of exploitation must end,” he remarked.
Without naming specific leaders, Soren accused certain political forces of misusing constitutional institutions and misleading voters with “sweet promises.” He emphasized that his campaign aims to present “ground realities” and empower citizens through awareness and education.
The rally forms part of a broader multi-state campaign strategy, as opposition leaders seek to expand their influence in Assam’s politically competitive landscape ahead of the assembly elections to be held on April 9 in a single phase.
Counting will take place on May 4.
He is scheduled to continue campaigning across the state, including upper Assam, until April 5.
