Acting on a tip off, police seized a large cache of adulterated mustard oil from a Mahindra pickup van bearing registration number AS-13-C-8233 at Tangla town in Udalguri district of Assam on Wednesday.

The Bhergaon sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Nirmal Ghosh supervised the operation along with a team of Tangla police and seized 140 tins of adulterated mustard oil which were in jars branded under the name of popular brand ‘Fortune’.

According to reports, the consignment was manufactured in a factory owned by one Gautam Surrana at Kharupetia in Darrang district and is being supplied across the neighbouring districts allegedly in connivance with food safety officials.

Talking to this correspondent, SDPO Ghosh said that the consignment of the adulterated mustard oil had no info of manufacturing date, batch number, expiry date and was to be delivered to ‘Banwari Mill’ owned by one Shiv Kumar Jha of Tangla town.

“We have sought help of the food safety officials for taking samples to laboratory. We have not arrested anyone in this regard so far,” he maintained.

The incident which has raised eye-brows of the people of the town and the locals have demanded necessary legal action on those miscreants involved in the racket and sealing of the factory which have been feeding the people with deadly poison in the name of pure mustard oil.
