The Meghalaya Cabinet has decided to hand over two hydel power projects of the state to North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), state power minister James K Sangma said on Wednesday.
The first project is the Umja-ut Hydro Electric Power Project with a capacity of 69 MW that has been renamed as Wah Umiam Stage I.
The second project is the Umduna Hydro Power Project with a capacity of 57 MW that has been renamed as Wah Umiam Stage II.
As per reports, the Cabinet has approved the allotment of both these projects to NEEPCO which is already implementing stage III Wah Umiam power project.
The decision to hand over the two hydel power projects to NEEPCO was taken at a recent meeting of the Meghalaya Cabinet.
Sangma further said that the Cabinet has also approved a proposal by the State-owned Meghalaya Electric Corporation Ltd (MeECL) to avail a loan from the Rural Electrification Corporation Limited to execute the 3×42 MW Myntdu Leshka Hydro power project.
The State Power Department has outstanding dues of over Rs 550 crore to be paid to the NEEPCO alone, forcing the State Power Department to resort to load shedding since January this year.
