With the performance of a play on Gandhiji, the valedictory function of the 15 days production oriented theatre workshop based on the life, philosophy and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi was held at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium of Palace Compound in Imphal on Sunday.

The play was directed by renowned theatre director Wareppa Naba.

Art and Culture Minister L Jayantakumar Singh and its commissioner M Lakshmikumar Singh attended the valedictory function as chief guest and functional president.

Director and deputy director of Art and Culture, theatre personalities and trainees of the workshop and their guardians also attended the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Jayantakumar said that research work on Mahatma Gandhi will be endless adding that the deeds of Gandhiji for humanity, not only for the Indians, but also for the downtrodden of the world will remain immortal.

Stating that despite the shortage of fund of the State Government, the Art and Culture Department has been putting its best to develop the rich culture of the State, he said.

The resources of talented artists in the State are well recognized by the rest of the country. The state has its own cultural policy, he said.

Informing that the State has a Cultural University, he, however, said that the financial constraints of the State and poor budget have really disheartened the fraternities in this field.

Still, the government is committed to do its best for developing its rich art and culture, he said. An official letter has also been submitted to the Union Finance Ministry for special fund for the State.

Besides, the state chief minister N Biren Singh has also expressed to allocate extra fund from Planning Department to meet the shortage of fund for the Art and Culture department.

The State Government is also planning to construct a theatre complex at a suitable place in the interest of the artists and theatre personalities, he added.

Later, the Arts and Culture minister and other dignitaries also distributed certificates to the trainees of the 15 days production oriented theatre workshop during the function.
