Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday called on all officials engaged in the work of upgradation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to ensure smooth completion of the hearing process of claims and objections.
The hearings for the claims and objections regarding NRC updation process have started from Friday at 1,436 centres across the State. In the final draft of NRC, names of 40.37 lakh people were not included out of which 36.28 lakh have claimed for inclusion and two lakh people have registered their objections.
Sonowal said that the process for preparing an error free NRC has been going on under the direct supervision of Supreme Court of India and added that both the Central and State Governments have extended support.
“An error free NRC would make the implementation of Clause 5 of Assam Accord possible,” he said.
On the other hand, the chief minister also appreciated through a statement the peaceful environment maintained by people during the publication of the first and the second drafts of National Register of Citizens. He appealed for upholding the same peace and harmony during the hearing process of claims and objections in 1436 centres. He also urged the officials engaged in the process to work with dedication to make the entire exercise a success.
