A four-member team of the CBI led by an officer of SP rank was in Kokrajhar on Friday to investigate the sensational Lafiqul Islam murder case.
Lafiqul, who was the president of the All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU), was shot dead by unidentified men at Titaguri market in Kokrajhar district on August 1 last year.
The CBI team from its Kolkata office arrived in Kokrajhar this morning and visited the shop in Titaguri market where Lafiqul was shot dead.
The team also visited State Bank of India’s NTPC branch at Salakati. Sources said the team will stay at Circuit House here for three days to carry out investigation into the case.
On being asked about the progress of investigation into the case, the CBI officials refused to comment. “No comment,” an official told reporters.
The Assam government, on August 4 last year, had written to the Centre requesting a CBI inquiry into the murder that had evoked widespread protests and condemnation in the state.
Lafiqul’s family and various organisations had demanded a CBI probe into his murder for impartiality as they suspect that a senior police officer could be involved in it.
There had been allegations that Lafiqul was killed because he was trying to expose the nexus between cattle smuggling gangs and some police officers.
