Sikkim Health Minister and local area legislator A K Ghatani inaugurated a five-day rock climbing adventure sports at Zoom rock garden at Jorethang on Tuesday.
This was stated in an official press release.
The rock climbing activity has been organized by Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco-Tourism (IHCAE), Chemchey. Senior IHCAE instructor Passang K Sherpa will be the guide for the participants.
The Minister, in his address, said the rock garden was constructed as a tourist destination with a view to generate employment and to promote local tourism. He directed the concerned officials present to further develop this garden in terms of infrastructure and other allied facilities and improve the existing facilities which will in turn create a huge tourism opportunities, thereby boosting the local economy.
The Minister further asked the gathering to organize the rock climbing sport throughout the year for the greater benefit of local populace and also suggested the Tourism & Civil Aviation department to promote the rock garden as one of the rock climbing centres in the State.
IHCAE administrator Ujirman Rai highlighted the basic minimum training required for rock climbing and urged the young enthusiasts to opt for it.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Minister flagged-off four bus services to ferry people to the Maghey Mela celebrations in Jorethang. The bus service will be free of cost exclusively for January 15, the inaugural ceremony of the Jorethang Maghey Sakranti Mela 2019, the release added.
