Mangaldai: Tribute was paid to the eight hundred and fifty-five martyrs of the six years long Assam Movement led by the All Assam Students’Union (AASU) in Darrang district on Monday on the occasion of the martyrs’ day.

In this connection, the Paschim Darrang Sangrami SatirthaSanmilan, a platform of former AASU members of the greater western part of the district organized a day-long programme in the premises of Borbori Pragati Sanggha near Duni.

The observation featured different programmes including hoisting of the organizational flag, Swahid Tarpan, Smriti Tarpan, lighting of lamps, Swahid memorial one-act play contest, Late Keshab Deka memorial ‘Diha Naam’ presentation contest and felicitation to the family members of the martyrs among others.

Several former leaders of the AASU including Bhargab Kr Das, former in-charge general secretary of AASU, Gajen Bora; president of Paschim Darrang Sangrami Satirtha Sanmilan, Phanidhar Rajbongshi, Mothura Mohan Deka, Mohan Chaliha, Kamala Kanta Deka, Golok Saikia, Hari Chandra Deka and Umesh Deka were present on the occasion and paid tribute to the martyrs byoffering  flowers at the martyrs’ memorial.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhargab Kr Das observed: “The sacrifices of the martyrs will be recognized only when our youth force could be motivated towards a positive and productive frame of mind.”

Das also said, “We have taken up series of agendas for economic uplift of our people including involvement of our youths in minor skillful profession like cobbler, barbar, etc. for self employment, but I am sorry to say that such practices cannot continue.”

He also urged upon the youths to follow the path of some ideal young farmers, entrepreneurs of the State including Nabanita Bora, Dhruba Saikia, Manab Chaliha, Habibur Rahman, etc. for self employment and also employ other few youths.
