Anti-graft group, Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland, on Friday expressed dismay that the Naga national political groups are unable to rein in the rogue elements or cadre within their set up.

In a statement, the ACAUT also said the Naga outfits failed to deal with the excesses perpetrated by their cadre in a manner that was appropriate and justifiable before the public eye.

The anti-graft group issued the statement in the backdrop of the abduction of a Naga salesgirl of a pharmacy in East Dimapur by suspected NSCN (Isak-Muivah) cadre on November 9.

Condemning the abduction, it said the people of the state are now quite familiar with extortions on the pretext of nationalism.

The statement described the brazen act of abduction of a helpless working woman by NSCN (I-M) cadres for extortion as “unpardonable and shameless act”, unimaginable in the Naga society.

The ACAUT called for a thorough investigation into the case so that all those involved in the crime were arrested.

Stating that Dimapur is the most “diverse, pluralistic and progressive” city of Nagaland and an indicator of the health of the Naga society, the ACAUT lamented that it was most afflicted by the scourges of taxation, extortion and syndicate system, with jungle raj and lawlessness symbolising rotting moral ethics and a collapsing society.

It also stated that the law and order have become a tricky and complicated affair for the district administration and the police to handle alone as the city embraced both traditional and modern set-ups and social structure.

Exerting social pressure by all tribal bodies, NGOs and civil body organisations on individuals from within their own community to conduct and act in such a manner so as not to disturb the fragile balance of diversity of Dimapur has become an absolute necessity.
