Several Congress leaders including former Assam minister Rockybul Hussain, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora and leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia were arrested in Guwahati on Thursday when they were leading a protest against the demonetization imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this day two years ago.

The Congress staged a protest rally against demonetization in front of the Reserve Bank of India at Panbazaar in the city that began at 11:30 am.

More than 100 other Congress workers were also picked up by police from the Panbazaar police station.

The Congress protestors tried to break police barricade and march ahead, but they were stopped by the strong police contingent stationed at the venue.

This led to scuffle between the police and Congress protestors.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was also present at the protest rally for some time.

While being taken away on a bus, senior Congressman and leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia termed the demonetization move as a ‘well-planned loot’.

Terming the day as a black in the country, Saikia also said that the demonetization had adversely affected the common people while strengthening the financial position of the capitalists.
