David Ngomle and Irani Sonowal were on Sunday crowned men’s and women’s singles champions respectively in 4th State Level Bamin Tani Memorial Badminton Tournament which came to a successful end at the multipurpose indoor stadium in Hapoli near here.
Where the men’s finals saw David defeat his closest rival Kirto Nyorak in straight sets of 21-15 and 21-8, Irani cruised through the finals with an easy 21-19, 21-14 win over Tayo Ana to clinch the women’s singles title.
David who later paired with Bikom Boje also won the men’s doubles title as the duo defeated Raj Thapa and Kenjom Tacha in sets of 21-18 and 22-20.
The women’s doubles final saw Irani and her partner Kenpi Karga defeat Dani Dilhyang and Chuku Martha in straight sets of 21-15 and 21-17 to win gold. The finals of the veteran’s category were also played on the day.
Where Laa Raju won the men’s singles (veteran) title defeating Hano Hailyang in sets of 22-20 and 21-16, the men’s doubles saw the pair of Jibang Gumja and Techi Tulo emerge as the champions as the duo defeated Dr Hage Tadii and Ige Gamlin in straight sets.
Matches were also played in the inter-school category in which Frontier School Ziro represented by Habu Tona and Tai Bakar won the inter-school senior boys’ team championship title defeating Subu Ropo and Lod Jorang of Ziro Valley School.
Tapi Pullo and Nitor Nayam of Love Shore Public School thrashed Mui Tadak and Kanhaiya Kumar Yadav of LBS Government Middle School in the junior team championship.
