Guwahati: The Arunachal Pradesh government has released four protesters arrested for opposing the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Hydropower Project, in a move aimed at easing tensions and reviving dialogue with the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF).
The four protesters have been identified as Adum Tayeng, Omak Peron, Okut Paloh and Oson Peron. They had been detained under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2014 (APUAPA), following demonstrations against the proposed mega hydropower project.
The government described the release as a goodwill measure intended to de-escalate tensions with SIFF and create an atmosphere for fresh discussions with the organisation over its opposition to the project.
As part of efforts to rebuild trust, the state government is also considering reinstating the suspended Gaon Burahs and Gaon Buris (village heads).
Meanwhile, the remaining demands raised by SIFF are expected to be discussed during a proposed meeting between representatives of the forum and the state government. The discussions are likely to focus on addressing the concerns of indigenous communities and exploring a way forward through dialogue.
The release of the four protesters signals the government’s attempt to reopen communication with the protesting groups amid continued opposition to the proposed Upper Siang hydropower project.
