Imphal: A local court in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Friday (November 6, 2026) sentenced a 58-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for murdering his wife in 2013.
Sessions Judge Kh. Ajit delivered the verdict against the convict, identified as Md. Abdul Halim of Kwakta Khuman, following his conviction under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code on August 11.
The court ruled that the period of detention already served by the convict during the investigation and trial would be set off against his prison term.
The case stemmed from an incident on June 14, 2013, at the couple’s rented residence in Golapati Maning Leikai Tangki Makhong.
According to police records, the convict repeatedly stabbed his wife, Amubi, with a knife before fleeing to a nearby house, where police tracked him down and arrested him later that evening.
During the trial, the prosecution presented testimonies from 15 witnesses, 21 documentary exhibits and eight pieces of physical evidence recovered from the crime scene.
Public Prosecutor Tongbram Bipinchandra argued that the nature of the attack warranted the severest punishment available under the law.
The defence counsel, however, sought leniency, arguing that the convict had no previous criminal record, was nearing 60 and had reformed through regular religious attendance.
