Doomdooma: Krishna, a beloved departmental elephant at Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, died at the park’s Western Range in Bagori on the evening of November 5 after suffering from prolonged ailments and visual impairment.

Assam Forest Minister Jayant Mallabaruah announced her passing on social media, paying tribute to her decades of service to the forest department.

“Some departures leave a silence that words cannot quite fill.

Deeply saddened by the passing of Krishna, one of our beloved departmental elephants at Kaziranga National Park, on the evening of 5 November 2026.

For our forest personnel, departmental elephants are far more than animals under their care. They are companions who share their everyday lives, their journeys through the forests and the challenges of protecting our wildlife,” Mallabaruah stated.

A post-mortem examination conducted on November 6 by veterinarians from Kaziranga National Park and the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) indicated that hepato-renal failure associated with old age was the preliminary cause of death.

Departmental elephants play a vital role in forest management across Kaziranga’s terrain under the care of dedicated mahouts and staff.
