Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, celebrated its 80th foundation day on Tuesday, marking eight decades of medical education, research and healthcare services in Assam and the Northeast.

Established on November 3, 1947, AMCH is the oldest medical college in the Northeast. Its origins date back to 1900, when Dr John Berry White established the Berry White Medical School in Dibrugarh, laying the foundation for modern medical education in the region.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal attended the celebrations as the chief guest. The event brought together doctors, healthcare professionals, students, faculty members, alumni and other guests.

The programme included an open session at the Dr John Berry White Auditorium, where Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Sanjeeb Kakati presented the annual report outlining the institution’s achievements and activities. The event also featured addresses by dignitaries, the release of a souvenir and an award ceremony recognising contributions and achievements.

MLAs Prasanta Phukan, Taranga Gogoi and Chakradhar Gogoi were among those present.

During his visit, Singhal inspected the Government Dental College and Dibrugarh Cancer Centre, both located within the AMCH campus.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended greetings to doctors, healthcare workers, students and the people of Assam on the occasion. He described AMCH as a centre of medical education and public healthcare in the Northeast.

Sarma said the institution had trained thousands of doctors and contributed to medical science and healthcare over the decades. He also referred to the state’s efforts to expand medical education through new medical colleges, AIIMS Guwahati and advanced cancer treatment facilities.

Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan congratulated the doctors, faculty members, students and employees of AMCH. He called for further strengthening the institution’s infrastructure, research facilities and medical education.

The celebrations concluded with the illumination of the campus and a cultural programme.
