Imphal: The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) has been asked to develop a comprehensive digital media policy and introduce a formal registration system for online news organisations in Manipur, amid the rapid expansion of digital journalism.
Chief Ministerโs Media Advisor Sunil Singh issued the directive on Sunday while addressing the 78th Information and Public Relations Day at the DIPR Auditorium in Nityaipat Chuthek. He stressed the need to strengthen the departmentโs professional capacity and improve the speed of information dissemination so that mainstream media outlets can access government updates promptly and give them greater prominence in their coverage.
Singh also called for renewed efforts to promote the Manipuri language, or Meiteilon, through regular news dissemination alongside the existing English-language publicity. Highlighting its role in connecting the stateโs 36 distinct communities, he urged DIPR officials to explore practical measures to expand the use of Manipuri across official communication channels.
Addressing the gathering, Information and Public Relations Secretary Neeta Arambam spoke about the challenges posed by the digital information landscape, where both authentic and fabricated content can spread across the world within seconds.
She emphasised the departmentโs responsibility to ensure that information disseminated through official channels remains truthful, accurate and responsible. Arambam also highlighted the departmentโs newly launched website as an important platform for sharing verified information with the public.
The programme began with a welcome address by Additional Director W. Phajatombi Devi, who highlighted the wide range of responsibilities handled by the department despite its limited workforce.
Additional Director T. Ramesh Singh delivered the vote of thanks. The event was attended by DIPR officials, staff members, pensioners and representatives of various media organisations.
