Dimapur: India’s leading private oil and gas producer Vedanta Oil & Gas Limited (VOGL) reiterated that it would unlock the Northeast’s rich hydrocarbon potential.

The company made the commitment at the North East Energy Summit 2026 – Nagaland Energy Chapter – at Chumoukedima on Friday.

In his special address, Nagaland power and parliamentary affairs minister KG Kenye urged the participating government departments, industry representatives, public sector enterprises and financial institutions to identify priority investment opportunities, prepare viable projects, improve government-industry coordination and establish practical mechanisms to follow up on commitments made during the summit.

He expressed hope that the proposed NEES Declaration would serve as a meaningful starting point for sustained cooperation, with clearly identified priorities, responsibilities and timelines.

At the summit, the company’s chief development officer Graham Richardson, director, Northeast, Balu Govind Meempat, and deputy director, Northeast, Avishkar Chauhan highlighted the significant opportunities across the region’s underexplored oil and gas basins.

They said advanced technology, supportive policy frameworks and close cooperation between governments and industry would be key to accelerating exploration and unlocking the Northeast’s long-term energy potential.

VOGL noted that Northeast India has a rich legacy of oil and gas exploration, with some of Asia’s earliest oil discoveries made in the Digboi-Namdang region, emphasising the region’s strategic role in strengthening India’s energy security, attracting investments and creating long-term economic opportunities.

The company found that the region has a rich legacy of oil and gas production, and yet it continues to hold considerable untapped hydrocarbon resources.

It is building on its exploration and development expertise, including its experience in Barmer, Rajasthan, to explore opportunities across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

The release said the company’s Rudra discovery has further strengthened its confidence in the region’s hydrocarbon prospectivity.

VOGL representatives also participated in industry panels on the region’s untapped hydrocarbon potential and unlocking Nagaland’s hydrocarbon potential.

The company’s long-term commitment to the Northeast is reflected in its investment plans. At Advantage Assam 2.0, Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal announced significant investments in oil and gas exploration and production across the region.

It further announced additional investments across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram at the Rising Northeast Summit, underscoring the Group’s confidence in the Northeast’s hydrocarbon potential and its role in India’s energy future.
