North Lakhimpur: A banner bearing the name and insignia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s youth wing was found attached to gas-filled balloons in a paddy field at Letekujan village under Narayanpur Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Friday.
A young boy spotted the balloons while grazing cattle in a nearby field during the morning. After they descended near an embankment, he collected them and took them home.
The banner, printed on flex, carried a message marking the 48th foundation anniversary of the Moulvibazar district unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the BNP’s youth wing. It also featured photographs of BNP leader and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
The discovery surprised local residents. Videos circulating on social media from Bangladesh have also shown similar balloons carrying party banners being released at different locations during the organisation’s anniversary celebrations.
After receiving information from villagers, a police team from Dhalpur Police Outpost visited Letekujan and took the balloons and banner into custody.
Police have begun an investigation to establish where the balloons came from and how they reached the village.
