North Lakhimpur: The continuing flood situation in Assam’s Lakhimpur district claimed one life, while two teenagers remained missing after separate incidents over the last 24 hours, officials said on Thursday.

In the first incident, a man was swept away by the strong currents of the Balijan River at Simaluguri on Wednesday evening while attempting to clear water hyacinths trapped on the pillars of a bridge so that he could catch fish.

The deceased was identified as Prasanta Duwarah (49), a resident of Ujani Bohupathar village in Bocha Pukhuri, Simaluguri.

A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered his body on Thursday morning. The body was sent to the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) for a post-mortem examination.

In another incident, two teenagers were feared drowned in the Subansiri River at Chawuldhowaghat after they went missing while swimming on Wednesday.

The missing boys have been identified as Nirmal Nath (16), son of Hari Narayan Nath, and Satya Nath (15), son of Mintu Nath, both residents of Thekeraguri village under Chawuldhowa Police Outpost.

SDRF personnel have been carrying out search and rescue operations in the river since Wednesday. However, the boys remained untraced till the filing of this report.

The incidents come amid widespread flooding across Lakhimpur district following incessant rainfall and rising water levels in major rivers, with authorities urging residents to stay away from swollen rivers and floodwaters.
