Guwahati: Assam’s renewed campaign against child marriage has resulted in 63 detentions in Dhubri district, the highest reported figure in the district-wise operation.

Police carried out the detentions across nine police station areas in Dhubri following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Those detained reportedly include people accused of involvement in child marriages, along with parents and guardians.

Dhubri Sadar recorded the highest number of detentions within the district, with 18 people taken into custody. Golakganj followed with 15 detentions, while Bilasipara recorded nine.

Gauripur police station reported eight detentions. Chapar and Fakirganj recorded five each, while two people were detained in Tamarhat and one in Agomoni.

The action in Dhubri is part of a wider statewide drive against child marriage. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that police had arrested 524 people and registered 441 cases as of 5 pm.

On October 28, Sarma reiterated that the campaign would continue until child marriage was eliminated from Assam. He also indicated that more arrests were likely as the operation progressed.

The state government has said the crackdown will cover individuals allegedly involved in facilitating child marriages, along with others suspected of participating in the practice.
