Guwahati: The Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) has approached the Delhi Police seeking registration of an FIR and an impartial investigation into allegations of sexual assault, racial harassment and public humiliation involving a person from Tripura in a viral social media video.
The complaint was submitted to the Joint Commissioner of Police heading the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER). The forum has sought action against those allegedly involved, along with the preservation of digital evidence linked to the video.
According to the complaint, a video circulating on Instagram allegedly shows a person from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and degrading treatment by a social media content creator. The forum identified the account as @amirshokeen, which it said was associated with an individual named Amir Shokeen.
The student body alleged that the video contains racially derogatory expressions, including โChinkiโ and โChinessโ, directed at the person to demean their ethnic and regional identity.
The complaint stated that such expressions, when used to humiliate someone on the basis of their perceived ethnic or regional identity, raise concerns about racial prejudice, dignity and equal treatment.
The forum also objected to an allegedly derogatory reference to Tripura in the video, saying the remarks had caused distress among members of the state’s community and undermined its dignity and reputation.
TSFD has urged the police to verify the identity and role of the person operating the social media account, as well as others who may have been involved in recording or facilitating the alleged incident.
The forum also requested that the alleged victim be contacted through a safe and confidential process so that their statement could be recorded sensitively. It sought the preservation of electronic evidence, including the original video, metadata and the platform’s upload history.
The office of the Joint Commissioner of Police-cum-Nodal Officer for the North-East Region has received the complaint. Further police action is awaited.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged incident and said those responsible should face legal consequences.
In a post on X, Rijiju said the Delhi Police and Tripura Police were coordinating to take action against the alleged perpetrator.
โThis evil man will be punished. There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson. People who tolerate such wicked behaviour in society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,โ Rijiju wrote.
His remarks followed the formal complaint submitted by TSFD to the Delhi Police’s SPUNER unit.
