Guwahati: A youth died and his friend was critically injured after an alleged mob attack following a two-wheeler accident at Borka Panitema in Assam’s Rangia, triggering protests outside Rangia police station on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Dhanjit Kalita, a resident of Athgaon in Rangia, while his friend, Bishal, remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

The duo was returning from Durga Puja celebrations when their two-wheeler met with an accident.

Kalita’s family alleged that bystanders attacked the youths instead of helping after the crash, leading to Kalita’s death from sustained injuries.

Following the incident, over 100 residents from Athgaon gathered outside the Rangia police station, demanding immediate arrest and strict legal action against the assailants.

Police have detained two suspects from Panitema, identified as Dipak Kalita and Mukut Deka, in connection with the attack.

Investigators are probing whether additional individuals were involved and assessing potential moral policing angles surrounding the assault.
