Guwahati: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have sought urgent intervention from the Delhi High Court after a magistrate extended their judicial custody by another two days.
The duo has requested a hearing at night, despite the High Court being closed for the Dussehra vacation this week.
The two leaders, on Monday, appeared before a newly appointed Special Executive Magistrate at Mandir Marg police station, who directed that they remain in judicial custody for two additional days.
Das and Ranka were detained on October 13 over allegations that they crossed a locked gate to enter Jantar Mantar.
The site had previously lost its status as an authorised venue for protests. They were subsequently remanded to five days of judicial custody.
CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh said the party had approached the High Court for an immediate hearing and demanded the leadersโ release.
Singh said on X that the party had requested an urgent hearing before the Delhi High Court that night, adding that Das and Ranka should be released without further delay and their freedom should not be restricted for political reasons. She called for justice to be delivered without delay.
The CJP claimed that delays in deciding the bail applications were keeping its two co-convenors behind bars and preventing their release.
Before police took them into custody, Das and Ranka joined fellow party members at Jantar Mantar to unfurl the Tricolour and voice their opposition to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police later detained the duo and placed them in preventive custody.
